چکیده

"Winner-Take-All"-markets, i.e. markets in which the relative and not the absolute performance is decisive, have gained in importance. Such markets have a tendency to provoke inefficiently many entries. We investigate the functioning of such markets with the help of experiments and show that there are even more inefficient entries than predicted by the Nash equilibrium. Moreover, this effect increases with group size. Quantal response equilibrium predicts the increase in group size but fails to predict the excess entry in the smaller group. We show that the excess entry is not caused by coordination failures. Furthermore, individual entry behavior is not significantly linked to risk preferences. We discuss several concepts that might explain the observed excess entry. JEL classification: C92; D81.

Entry into Winner-Take-All and Proportional-Prize Contests

This experiment compares the performance of two contest designs. In the winner-take-all tournament, the highest performing contestant wins a prize. In the proportional-payment design, that same prize is divided among the contestants according to their share of total achievement. We find that proportional prizes elicit higher entry rates and thus more total achievement than the winner-take-all t...

Entry into winner-take-all and proportional-prize contests: An experimental study

This experiment compares the performance of two contest designs: a standard winnertake-all tournament with a single fixed prize, and a novel proportional-payment design in which that same prize is divided among contestants by their share of total achievement. We find that proportional prizes elicit more entry and more total achievement than the winner-take-all tournament. The proportional-prize...

Can We Predict the Winner in a Market with Network Effects? Competition in Cryptocurrency Market

We analyze how network effects affect competition in the nascent cryptocurrency market. We do so by examining early dynamics of exchange rates among different cryptocurrencies. While Bitcoin essentially dominates this market, our data suggest no evidence of a winner-take-all effect early in the market. Indeed, for a relatively long period, a few other cryptocurrencies competing with Bitcoin (th...
